For the history of development of the Polish movement in Upper Silesia, the aid which inhabitants of Greater Poland (Wielkopolska) extended to Upper Silesians, beginning with the mid-19th century until the Interwar period, was of great import_ance. The former, coming from the lower middle-class (petit bourgeois) and intelligentsia backgrounds, got interested in Silesia in the time of the Spring of Nations. In the second half of the 19th century, their support for Silesia became strengthened, sińce they began settling down in this region.
